Politics is a noble activity.( Many of us do not believe that because I hear voices across the Territory referring to politics as "politricks.") We should practise it with vocation and dedication that require testimony and martyrdom, that is to die for the common good." (Pope Francis.)
The Premier is Head of the Government and though not Head of State is seen by B. V. Islanders as a symbol of unity and integrity of the Territory at home and abroad. The people of the Territory expect that person to set a high standard of moral and ethical behaviour. "Today, more than ever, citizens demand with good reason that the moral and ethical principles be uphold and that examplariness presides over our public life....the head of state must not only be an example but also a servant to that just and legitimate demand of the citizens." (King Felipe VI.) B. V. Islanders expect their Premier to be a champion of human dignity, human capacity, human values, the embodiment of all that is British Virgin Islands, a steward for their heritage, freedom, truth and justice, and should have respect for everyone, not only those he wishes to impress.
In doing so he brings joy and satisfaction to the people. To achieve this "all political activity must serve and promote the good of the human person and be based on respect for his or her dignity." (Pope Francis). Everyone should be mindful that today's world tells us "to seek success, power, and money but God tells us to seek humility, service, and love." Meeting the demands of the State(the world) and the demands of God is a balancing act. When weighed it should not be found wanting. To achieve this all of us should put God first. (Matt. 6:33).
